At home.
It's damn near November, and Shadow's starting to feel like it; the wind is sharper as it whips down from the Hill and there's less daytime to finish all the work what needs doing.

The weather is matching Sallie's mood of late, and riding around the drying fields for a fence check in the morning dawn sounds like the best plan ever, even if she does submit to the elements by digging out a heavier jacket from the spare room on the first floor.

Ain't no snow, but the wind cuts through Ennis like a knife, his old joints creaking like a door ain't nobody oiled in forever. He leans quietly against a tree -- that tree -- and watches Sallie come closer.

("I never intended for any of this -- ")

Sallie brings the reins in on her horse, dismounting -- downed rail. Like hell is she going to hoist it by herself, but Sallie digs out a digital notepad, marking down the location of the --

"Hello?"

No, she's by herself out here.

By herself... maybe. Not alone. A voice echoes back at her, soft but gruff, a low growl almost, but definitely not an animal.

Maybe it says "Sallie", or maybe that's her imagination.

She does have a very active one, sometimes.

The notepad is stuffed back in her coat pocket, and she mounts her horse again roughly.

"Thought you left," Sallie offers to nobody.

"But you came back to Milliways."

It's awkward, looking at the man in the white hat; it's like the only thing in focus are details, but the whole isn't there. It's just jaw and brim and boot and

You didn't remember me. You didn't come back at all.

Nothing.

His eyes flicker, and flicker down, under the brim of his hat, as there's the clicking sound of a lighter, though none to be seen.

He shrugs, and it almost says, not really, and his grunt says about the same.

"Who I was."

without the implied, "not who I am."

"I would've thought you'd have better places to be by now."

This Ennis. That other one weren't someone Sallie ever got to know.

There's an impish grin and, just for a moment, that younger face shines through the wrinkles.

"Better'n here?"

Sallie looks dumbstruck for a few seconds, before letting a surprised laugh escape; the old listening to the truth of the young, and it might make Sallie cry later but she doesn't rutting care.

"You might be right."

He raises his eyebrows in a way that says -- if he won't -- that of course he is.

"'sides, somebody gotta watch over you."

"If you say so, nianqing de."

The wind's starting to pick up again, and Sallie's expression turns to dismay.

"You'll come back sometime?"

"Ain't goin' nowhere" is what he says, maybe. Though the wind's loud enough that could be somethin' else altogether.

Sallie's horse is getting restless standing in one spot, so the woman moves on, back to her work.

The feeling she has every now and again for the day that someone might be falling into line behind her is more comforting than it should be.
